OUR LEGACY MISSON

Since our establishment in 1999, our mission has been to preserve the traditions and values of Okinawan martial arts while empowering students of all ages to train with confidence, discipline and purpose.

WHY CHOOSE SMA AUSTRALIA?

Because legacy matters. Taira Shinken (1897–1970), one of Okinawa’s most respected martial artists, dedicated his life to preserving and teaching Ryukyu Kobudo — the traditional Okinawan weapons system. His efforts ensured this knowledge was not lost to time.

Years later, that same spirit of preservation found its way to Australia. Shihan Hennie de Vries, a direct student of Grandmaster Uehara Ko, who was in turn part of this rare lineage, continues to uphold and pass down these teachings right here in Donvale.

Since 1999, School of Martial Arts Australia has remained committed to the same values that defined masters like Taira Shinken — tradition, discipline, and the empowerment of students through authentic martial arts practice.

This is why we do what we do. Not just to teach techniques — but to honour a legacy that spans generations.
